Crewe
A railway town. A creative town. A place still making its mark.
Look up from the everyday route through town. A wall becomes an image; a familiar corner asks for another glance. In Crewe, a place shaped by making and movement, street art brings that creative energy into view.
Built on movement
Start with the railway. The first train called at Crewe’s Grand Junction Railway station in 1837, and the town grew around that movement. Then look beyond the tracks: the skills, traditions and people who give a place its character. Crewe’s story is as much about belonging as it is about engineering.
Room for culture
A square can be somewhere to pass through, or somewhere to pause. Lyceum Square opened as a cultural community space in June 2023, turning a former car park into a setting for arts and performance. For CreweColours, it is the home of the free Paint Jam Weekend: live painting, DJs and hip-hop on 31 October and 1 November 2026, 10am–4pm.
Placemaking, in colour
Take a familiar street and give yourself a reason to slow down. Notice a colour, follow a painted line, talk about what you see. This is where placemaking begins: in the relationship between a place and the people spending time in it. A mural might become a meeting point or a detail you look for on the way home. CreweColours opens up those possibilities, one encounter at a time.
A week of painting. A longer story.
A week of painting can be the beginning of a longer relationship with a place. CreweColours runs from 26 October to 1 November 2026, with murals intended to remain beyond the festival. Alongside Crewe’s existing public art, they offer another reason to look again. Let the story continue beyond the programme, and check each work’s location and access details when planning a visit.
